Business Reporting

September 11, 2020 by Bluetab

Business Reporting

Bluetab provides all departments of a telecoms operator’s Corporate Business Area with reporting services and developments with a special focus on the remuneration model of agencies, distributors and internal staff.

The creation of data marts and process automation enables updating and access to information at higher frequency, facilitating monitoring and decision-making. It also improves the reliability of the data due to the standardisation of their sources. As a general rule, the tools used are Teradata, Pentaho and Microsoft Power BI and, to a lesser extent, Talend and Azure cloud publishing.

Global model of banking supervision

Global model of banking supervision

Banks must meet a growing volume of complex and granular reporting requirements. The methods used to collect reporting data are not fully harmonized, often leading to redundancies, overlaps, and inconsistencies in the resulting data sets. In this context there is a need to integrate existing statistical data requirements, as far as possible, into a single, standardized reporting framework that would be applicable throughout the euro area and could also be adopted by other European countries, thus easing the burden of bank reports and improving the quality of the data reported to the authorities.

The project scope covers the main supervisory reports: the ECB’s granular credit and credit risk data collection (AnaCredit), the ECB’s stock trend statistics (SHS), the balance sheet items statistics of monetary financial institutions (BSI) of the ECB, as well as statistics of interest rates of the monetary financial institutions of the ECB (MIR); likewise, other needs are considered as a requirement, such as the balance of payments and national accounts.

Our team carries out the project based on persistence in a big data lake, with ingests and transformations of the information in scala / spark technology. The transformation rules to create additional information have been defined based on “Validation and Transformation Language (VTL)” with minor adaptations to improve ease of use and end-user readability.

The generated system that follows this process begins by feeding the input layer from the banks’ internal IT systems, following the structure of the defined input layer cubes. The data processes can be divided into layers (input, enriched layer and output layer) and three phases that separate those layers: transformations in the input layer, output layer and the assignment application that describe the relationships between them. All phases can include validations, for example validations that ensure the integrity of the input layer, validations that ensure the consistency of the enriched input layer, validations that apply the validation rules (external) in the non-reference output layer.

Corporate banking market supplier information

Corporate banking market supplier information

Within our context as a benchmark technology partner in the Data field in the Corporate Investment Banking area for one of the leading Spanish financial institutions operating in the principal markets globally; a collaborative technology approach is being developed to rationalise the use of information acquired from external suppliers (Bloomberg, CMA, Markit, S&P, Fitch, Moody’s, etc.) and to impact the cost to final consumers based on the demand for and use of that information. The information is obtained from the original sources to provide the highest quality data at the lowest possible cost.

Storage in the Data Lake is performed by ingestion and normalization of data from various sources, and modelling and population of the Common data layer. The information is made available by means of the application data layer (relational) feed, with development of microservices that expose this data via various APIs (mainly Rest API, Bulk and asynchronous for Events).

Our team performs the design and implementation of access control and payment for use of the information, as well as the design and implementation of the counterparty identifier catalogue system.

The main technologies used are Spark/Scala for information ingestion and its storage in the main lake in Scality of the Global Banking Transactions area, exposure of Java and Spring Boot-based microservices is performed in a PaaS where Kubernetes and OpenShift are used in turn, with API management performed through IBM API Connect.

Regulatory Capital Calculation

Regulatory Capital Calculation

In the context of the implementation of a risk-based supervisory methodology known as the Comprehensive Supervisory Framework (MIS for its initials in Spanish), we collaborated with a leading Spanish financial institution to integrate the risks that could affect the institution and enable the construction and full evaluation of its corporate risk profile by bringing together all the information from the local entities that make up the financial group.

The contribution of the bank’s assets is monitored monthly for this purpose. A variety of corporate extraction, transformation and loading processes are performed to do this, providing a solution to budget team reporting times, due to the latent need of users to automate their reporting process, and translating their Excel Macro into a Spark/Scala process.

Outstanding within the evolution are the performance improvements and upgrading of the corporate Big Data platform for better organisation and management of parameters, transformation of the source tables to dashboards and migration of tables to a common module called “common data”.

This project has its own data governance processes, providing for pre-ingestion approval and a series of technical and functional validations performed in the platform landing layer. The Business layer accessed by users is supplied with two tables (as the numerator and denominator of the budgets).

Data reporting is performed with MicroStrategy and the ETL process is based on Scala/Spark technology.

Investment and Corporate Banking Regulations

Investment and Corporate Banking Regulations

In this field, we are involved in major Big Data lake developments, where the main users are the regulatory and risk departments associated with the growing need in the area to comply with the various standards and regulatory frameworks demanded by the legislators and federal reserves in these markets.

We needed to adapt the Data Lake to be compliant with the new IOSCO regulation which requires the exchange of collateral (IM) between entities operating with derivatives at contract formalisation time.  The primary objective of this project is to provide the sensitivities information necessary to correctly calculate this Initial Margin and to perform the subsequent validation of the model using the Backtesting and Benchmarking calculations required by the regulator.

We tackled the specific project developments required by this regulation by carrying out the prior definition and analysis of requirements, for subsequent design and programming with data modelling, ETL processes based on Scala/Spark, and user testing and integration for production (deployment, process optimisation, etc.).

Once the project had been deployed, we supported it through a centre of excellence where we performed specific tasks for software quality, monitoring, analysis and optimisation of processes, coordination of updates and migrations, as well as developing “velocity tools” or common utilities with common service for all the projects on the platform.

The main technologies are Scala/Spark for processing, in a Hive database, and under a planner in Control-M.

PSD2 regulations

PSD2 regulations

PSD2 is a European regulation on digital payment services. This system facilitates payments throughout Europe with greater security as well as offering a banking service adapted to new technologies. With it, the importance that the world of ‘APIS’ or ‘Application Program Interface’ is acquiring in different financial sectors is once again evident.

Bluetab carries out the start of the project for the main Spanish Financial Institution. We generate the necessary documentation to determine the scope of the project, perform the analysis of the availability of information within the platform, as well as address the definition and analysis of requirements (KPIs, data source)

The development of the project is based on the design and programming (data modeling, ETL processes), tests and putting into production (deployment, process optimization, etc.). All based on processes under Powercenter, in a Teradata database with reports to the end user in Microstrategy.
